Safety First : Red Light Indicators on Emergency Break Glass Hammers on NWKRTC Airavat Gold Class VOLVO B9R Multiaxles

After the VOLVO mishaps of Haveri (Karnataka) and Andhra Pradesh, both the STUs (State Transport Units) and the Private Operators have brought strict rules regarding safety in VOLVOs.
On the same lines, the STU unit of North Karnataka - NWKRTC (North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation) - a KSRTC unit have introduced red light indicators on all the Emergency Break Glass Hammers which are placed near the four Emergency Break Glass Exits in the VOLVO.

  2. I've seen a few times when these lights have come in handy. Lots of people might think that they don't serve a purpose. I think they can be very handy. Any time an emergency happens, clarity in movement is key.

  3. Thanks for your comment, Derrick. Actually these lights don't come factory fitted in a VOLVO B9R Multiaxle in India. There are certain reasons, why this specific operator from India, choosed to put the red light indicators above the emergency break glass hammers.

In 2013, India saw 2 of the most worse VOLVO B9R multiaxle accidents, where in both the buses in separate accidents were completely doused in fire. Many lives were lost in both the accidents. Although many reports came in, the main reason addressed by everyone was the lack of safety measures being taken in these buses.

Acting on the same, an operator from my current city of Belgaum, Karnataka (India), NWKRTC (North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation), a division of KSRTC (Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation) with its headquaters in Hubli, Karnataka (India) a State Transport Undertaking (STU), took this initiative of introducing red light indicators on all the Emergency Break Glass Hammers which are placed near the four Emergency Break Glass Exits in the VOLVOs belonging to the unit.

The red light indicators remain ON throughout the journey and thus they also provide an indication to all the passengers travelling in the bus, as of where the Emergency Break Glass hammers are, so that it becomes easy to locate them in case of many mishaps or emergency.

    Regards
