Tips for drivers of Corona Buses in India

Here are some Tips for Drivers for optimum maintenance of Corona Buses in India :

1 .Use only recommended oils and lubricants. Use of thicker engine oil for higher engine oil pressure only reduces engine life.

2. Always use recommended antifreeze agents in cooling system to avoid deterioration of engine components due to corrosion. After filling coolant, fit radiator cap firmly, to keep cooling system pressurized.

3. Maintain correct tyre pressures to ensure better tyre life.

4. Always fit genuine radiator cap to keep system pressurized at predetermined values.

5. New tyres do not give maximum grip straight away and should therefore be run-in at moderate speeds for first 100 kms. This will help to make the tyres last longer.

6. New brake linings must always be run-in, they do not have the optimum friction properties during the first 200 kms. Make sure use asbestos free brake lining as per Govt. Environmental regulations.

7. Avoid mixing of different grades of lubricants or brake fluids during top up.

8. Idle the engine for 3 to 5 minutes before moving the vehicle and stopping the engine to avoid turbo charger from oil starvation.

9. Always start moving the vehicle in first gear.

10. Operate the vehicle in correct temperature range i.e., between 60 deg C and 100 deg C

11. Operate the engine with correct oil pressure and temperature.

12. Daily maintenance is to be regularly performed especially on water separator, coolant level and engine oil level always do refit the water separator drain knob during filter replacement.

13. Avoid cranking of engine for more than 30 seconds. A gap of 2 minutes should be left between successive attempts.

14. Drive judiciously, using rpm meter as a guide. The engine speed should be in green band at all times for economical and comfortable driving. Green band indicates the engine torque RPM range i.e, 1400 to 2000.

15. Check battery every week and top up wth distilled water, if necessary. Keep battery terminals clean and cable joints tights. Apply vaseline / petroloeum jelly on terminals.

16. Watch service indicator of dry type air filter. If it shows red band in engine stopped condition replace primary cartridge and reset the service indicator by pressing the reset button.

17. Observe correct polarity while connecting alternator to battery. Do not check battery condition by sparking the terminals.

18. Do not use kerosine as fuel, adultrated diesel may reduce engine and fuel pump life. We strongly recommend use of diesel comforming to emission standard specification (Euro II / Euro III)

19. Do not use clutch pedal as a foot rest while driving. This will cause premature clutch lining wear and higher fuel consumption.

20. Do not coast vehicle, i.e, drive with engine switched off. This is dangerous for the safety of vehicle and affects the life of gear box.

21. Do not over or under inflate tyres. This reduces tyre life. Watch Tyre wear and relocate tyre by rotation as per recommendation of tyre manufacturer.

22. Do not top up radiator by pouring cold coolant in to hot engine.

23. Do not overfill engine oil in the sump. This may cause engine smoking and high engine oil consumption.

24. Do not keep starter switch key turned after the engine has fired. Release it immediately. Do not turn starter switch key when the engine is running. This will damage the starter pinion or flywheel ring gear.

25. Do not move vehicle before air pressure is built above 5.6 bar and hand brake is completely released, i.e, Hand Brake indicator light and beeper are off.

26. Do not run the alternator without battery or disconnect any lead of alternator while the engine is running.

27. Do not flash the alternator leads to check for current flow. Switch off main line switch when carrying out welding on the vehicle.

28. Do not mask head lamps lens (top 1/3 or top 1/2 portion) with black paint. If done, this will reduce head lamp light intensity.

29. Do not keep the engine at full throttle during engine cranking, keep the engine at idling till the oil pressure builds up.

30. Do not clean exposed painted surface or wind screen with petroleum products i.e, diesel, kerosene and petrol etc.

31. If the red band of service indicator reappears even after cleaning replace primary filter cartridge also.

32. If the air filter primary cartridge is replaced, destroy the old cartridge to prevent its reuse.

33. Ensure that air intake hose, coolant hose are free from punctures, cuts and damages.

34. Replace the secondary cartridge of air filter after three replacement of primary cartridge.

35. Do not clean the secondary carridge. Only replacement is recommended.

36. Always use seat belt while driving the vehicle for your safety.

37. Do not use mobile phone while driving for safety of yourself and other road users.

38. Do not adjust the seat while driving.

39. Do not run over speed on road hums, speed breakers or open man holes on road to prevent strain on air suspension parts.

40. Do not run A.C. compressor without switching on A.C. Blower

41. Do not keep luggage door, passenger door open when moving or driving the vehicle.

42. Do not operate wiper blades on dry wind screen without switching on wind screen washer nozzles.

43. Do not use direct wire link between fuse terminals instead of properly rated transparent fuse.

44. Do not use service brakes on prolonged down gradients, instead use lower gear's and engine exhaust brake.

45. Do not press clutch when applying engine exhaust brake. Switch off isolater switch when engine exhaust brake is not warranted.

46. Do not operate the bus with deflated air bag or wish bone resting on mechanical stoper's.

47. Do not use remoulded tyres in the front wheels.

48. Do not jack up the vehicle other than specified location on the structure.

49. Do not use higher wattage bulb for head lights to get brighter illumination.

Precautions for Summer Season - VOLVO Buses

During summer season due to the extreme heat, precautionary measures need to be taken to minimize Engine Over-heat complaints and to prevent its consequential damages


Following are a few check points which can be done to safeguard the Buses to make sure of its optimum performance during summers :
  • Check the Radiator condition and Intercooler fins for air passage. Clean the fins by air on alternate days to avoid blockages. If required carry out the radiator overhauling. Make a chart to carry out radiator fins cleaning for all the vehicles in depot and verified by AWS/Charge men for better follow ups. 
  • Check the Radiator auxiliary tank and Retarder hose pipes, replace the hose pipe and clamp if required. 
  • Check Coolant condition and replace at 2nd Annual services. Check Coolant pump leakage, fan clutch function, fan belt condition and replace if required.
  • Inspect engine compartment body condition and heat shield of turbo charger to avoid heat transfer to the saloon.
  • Check Air Filter element & hose pipe condition, if choked, replace the filter elements.
  • Check the tappet clearance and carry out the tappet adjustment as per the schedule. 
  • Check all the wiring harness routing and hangings, particularly at Engine compartment, battery and air filter side. Insulate the opened wires and carry out proper routing to avoid short circuit and consequential damages. 
  • Check the battery, battery pole, terminal condition and follow the schedule. Apply petroleum jelly and recheck the mountings. 
  • Instruct driver to have a watch on the dashboard warning signal and to stop the engine if necessary to avoid damages to the engine. 
  • Instruct the electrician to check the dashboard warning lamp and gauges proper working condition in all the vehicles.
  • Keep one radiator and Intercooler in stock as float for emergencies.
  • The fast moving parts like Coolant pump, Radiator hose pipe, Clamps, Retarder hose, Fan Belt, Auxiliary Coolant Tank to be kept in stock. 

Procedural Filter Change in Power Steering (VOLVO B7R)


Stepwise procedural filter change in power steering : 

1. Clean round the cap and the dipstick before the cap is removed. 

2. Press down and unscrew the locking device for the filter. 

3. Lift Up the old filter and keep one finger under the filter's centre hole, so that the impurities from inside the filter do not enter the oil reservoir.


4. Transfer the locking device to the new filter and insert it into the oil reservoir.

5. Check that the filter is positioned correctly and is locked in place securely. 

6. 

For oil dipstick in oil container :
  • Check the oil level and top up with oil to the MAX marking
For oil dipstick in oil reservoir in vehicles with hydraulically controlled shaft :
  • Pull apart the connector to the electrical cable for the oil dipstick
  • Check the oil level. With the engine shut off, the level should reach the MAX mark on the dipstick
7. Fit the cover.

An Inspiring evening with Vivek Pawar

      Being an ardent enthusiast, with dreams of entrepreneurship, i always do look for people from whom i can get inspired from. Few days ago, i came across an ad in allaboutbelgaum (AAB), Belgaum's premium news and current affairs website, about Vivek Pawar, Founder, Executive Chairman, Sankalp Semiconductor, giving a talk under "My Story" Series of Talk initiated by KLS IMER, Hindwadi, Belgaum.

Mr Vivek brings in 20 years of industry experience in varied functions of General Management, Operations, Program Management, Customer Relations and rich experience in in Mixed signal and Analog Product Design, System on Chip (SoC) Development, including firmware development.
Prior to Sankalp Semi conductor, Mr Vivek was Program Manager at at Texas Instruments Inc. (Houston, USA) during 2003 - 2005. and General Manager for Broadband Silicon Technology Center in Texas Instruments India, Bangalore from 2000 - 2003, and a part of TI India Management Team. 

MR VIVEK PAWAR DELIVERING HIS SPEECH AT KLES IMER, BELGAUM 
I want to briefly present some excepts from the inspirational speech that Mr Vivek Pawar gave, in KLS, IMER, Belgaum.

In his entire speech, Mr Pawar stressed on the facts which makes a better entrepreneur. He said, "there should be no compromise on values and integrity of a person as an entrepreneur. The values and integrity are the deepest convictions which helps a person to succeed even during his tough times". 
He also focussed on team work as a means of collective effort to surge towards success. Mr Pawar insisted of making a small team to start with, but totally engrossed on ethical values, which will not make a good foundation of any comapny but will also help in surviving the tough times in the industry. 

Mr Pawar further adds that mentorship also plays an important factor to the success of an entrepreneur as an individual, because its the correct guidance not only in failures but also in success, which matters a lot. He stressed on having mentors in life as he says he was guided by many mentors in life, which proved to be really a boon to his success. 

He highlighted a very important point in his speech, that we always do look for successful people, to get inspired and move ahead with a successful life, but there is lot to learn from people who have failed in life. A successful person will always tell, what are the mantras to get success, or rather what we should do for success, but a failed person at the same time will tell what not to do to avoid failure and and get success. As human beings we are always prone to mistakes and we do learn from mistakes, but there are few people who in fact tell us the ways to avoid mistakes and go ahead in life. 

Mr Pawar in his enchanting address told about how to create an ecosystem of positivity and success. He stressed on building a positive ecosystem by keep positive people who support you at all times, for these are the people who really uplift you, during bad times and at the time of need. 

He further underlined the need of leadership traits, and told that the quality of leadership is very important in life and also in the industry. 
Explaining about two kinds of leaders - born leaders and made leaders that we come across many people in life. There are some who have leadership traits right from childhood, they have lead their class, school, colleges, and later have hold leadership positions in their career fields. At the same time there are people who become situational leaders. This genre are the people who act according to the situations and peform good leaderships when and where needed. They may not have taken such responsibilities and always in their life but when needed and may when they feel motivated, they have shown their full worth and and skills of leadership. 
He said a very important thing on situational leadership. Situational leadership can prove very vital if it can be tapped and groomed. 

He stressed on the following qualities to be brought in as an individual for leadership : 

1. Initiatives
2. Communication
3. Vision

Taking a step or initiating a step in any sphere, needs courage and determination. As a leader one needs to take the risk to initiate or rather initialize. 

Communication plays an important role, one needs to know what to speak how to speak. Until you communicate, the person in front of you wont need your views. In order to relay one;s views, one should speak, one to communicate. 

Vision - Most people do show blank faces when asked how do you feature yourself say 5-10 years from now? A leader always have a vision, he dreams and he visualizes, he makes plan for his upcoming ventures, which keep him motivated always. 

Challenge is a factor which Mr Pawar described in a different perspective. Whenever a challenge comes, people do have a sense of insecurity regarding their success or maintaining their level of success, but if challenge is taken in a  positive way, it may prove to be the next level of success. he stressed on having people around who can challenge, so that it can motivate us to always keep ahead of the challenger which in fact not only will help us to have a positive impact in our life but at the same time, it will make us a better person on competing levels, from the one that we were yesterday. 

Mr Pawar marked some important points, which are needed for companies to succeed :

2. Commercial Excellence (Business Leadership)
3. Execution Leadership

He further said a very important point,

"Opportunities come everyday, if you are clear about your goals, you can open the required door of the opportunity that knocks your door"

On being asked what traits, he looks for in his partners at work, he encircled the following :

2. Qualities better than self
3. Complimentary
4. Good Corporate Communication

He says, that he always takes some time on deciding a partner. he believes that he takes time to understand a person personally and professionally to make him a partner. 

On the Mentor - Mentee relationship, Mr Pawar lastly added its the duty of the Mentee to make a better ad sustainable relationship with the Mentor. The Mentor is always there to help, but it really depends on the Mentee how he utilizes the time, the opportunity and learn from the Mentor.   

These were the few points that i have scribbled on my notebook, at Mr Vivek Pawar's Speech at the KLS IMER. I am very happy to have spent a nice inspiring evening listening, studying and learning from a great enterpreneur from Karnataka. My thanks to TiE Hubli and KLS IMER for making this happen in Belgaum. In course of time, I think we will able to hear from more people like Mr Vivek Pawar, which not only inspires the younger generation but also guides and aligns them towards success and personal growth.

Compressed-Air Brake System Layout

The Compressed Air Brake System for the B7R is a duplex circuit brake system, with one circuit for the front wheel brakes and one for the rear wheel brakes. There is also a circuit for the Parking Brake and another for extra equipment

The B7R can be fitted with different compressors, the Knorr LP48 or the Knorr 213. The Knorr 213 is available only in the leaf spring version.

VOLVO B7R COOLANT CIRCUIT DIAGRAM

Working of the Coolant Circuit of VOLVO B7R :

The coolant is pumped by the cooling pump 4 into the longitudinal distribution channel in the cylinder block and then via holes and nozzles to the cylinder liners and up to the two cylinder heads. the coolant from the cylinder head is led straight to the thermostat housing 2 while it from the rear comes via an outer pipe.

The Oil cooler 6 is linked with the cylinder block and thermostat housing by outer pipes.

If the bus is equipped with automatic transmission and/or built in retarder it will be cooled via pipes 5. Without automatic transmission a curved pipe will be connected between inlet and outlet instead of the pipes 5.

A - The thermostat is of plunger type. It is mounted in a press-cast aluminium housing. The plunger thermostat monitor the coolant temperature in the engine cooling circuit.

When the engine is cooled the thermostat is closed, the coolant from the front and rear cylinder heads comes to the thermostat housing via inlet 7 and 8 and is directly led to the coolant pump via oulet 12. Connection 9 is for cooling the automatic transmission while connection 10 is a return line. 11 is return from Oil Cooler, while connection 13 leads to the radiator.

B - When the engine is warm the thermostat seals against the bottom of the thermostat housing and the coolant goes via connection 13 via radiator 1. Coolant recommended for cooling system is a 40-60% mixture of VOLVO's anti-freeze type C and water. The antifreeze is most effective (-46 deg C) with a 60% mixture. The VOLVO coolant is also recommended when the coolant is not for protection against frost because it still provides very good protection against rust. A mixture ratio of less than 40% coolant will leave you with inadequate rust protection. The coolant should be changed every other year.

Air Suspension System Layouts : 

       Compressed air to the air suspension system is taken from the compressed air outlet 26, which is placed next to the four-circuit protection valve. From there, the air goes via level valves 29 to the air bellows.

Trouble Shooting and Corrective Action on VOLVO BUS passenger seats

RECLINING SEATS PUSH BACK SEATS WITHOUT CALF SUPPORT (NORMAL SEATER)
RECLINING SEATS PUSH BACK SEATS WITH CALF SUPPORT (SEMI SLEEPER SEAT)

1. Problem : Armrest Play 

Corrective Action : 

(a) Check for the tightness of the Hex Socket head screw. Tighten the Arm rest assemblies using 5mm allen key at least once a week to avoid armrest loosening. 

(b) Replace the Nylon washers if found worn out. The average life of the nylon washer is one year. 

2. Problem : Backrest Play 

Corrective Action : 

(a) Check for the tightness of the M10 Nyloc nut once in a month. If so, tighten the M10 Nyloc nuts (4 nos) of the backrest assemblies using 16/17 spanner to avoid backrest play. 

(b) Adjust the gas spring mechanism by tightening the rear nut of the mechanism using 27 DE spanner to arrest the back rest play. Ensure that adequate gap is maintained between the gas spring eye and the reclining lever. Excess tightening may result in reclining lever getting struck which in turn may lead to auto reclining of the back rest. 

3. Problem : Pushback not functioning / Auto reclining 

Corrective Action : 

(a) Check for proper functioning of the gas spring. If any oil leakage noticed, replace the gas spring immediately 

(b) Check for the tightness of the mechanism. Adjust the gas spring mechanism by tightening the rear nut provided in the mechanism using the 27 DE Spanner. Ensure that adequate gap is maintained between the gas spring eye and the reclining lever. Excess tightening may result in reclining lever getting stuck which in turn may lead to auto reclining of the back rest.

4. Problem : Upholstery fading and dust getting accumulated 

Corrective Action : 

(a) Vacuum clean the upholstery once in a week to avoid dust getting accumulated on to the fabric. Regular vacuum cleaning avoids fabric fading and increases the life of the fabric. 

(b) Dont not use any chemical based solution to clean the fabric as it may affect the quality of the fabric. 

(c) Do not use water directly to clean the fabric as water may seep in to the foams and detoriate the quality of the foam which may result in foam getting harder over a period of time.

5. Problem : Leg rest mechanism not functioning 

Corrective Action : 

(a) Grease the sliding bracket of the mechanism at least once in a month to ensure smooth operation of the mechanism. 

(b) Check for the condition of the lever mounting bolt atleast once in three months. If found worn out, replace the same immediately.

Scania Ecolink : Low Floor Ethanol Bus starts its Inaugural run

Scania Ecolink, the low floor ethanol fuelled city bus by NMC (Nagpur Municipal Corporation) have started its commercial runs in Nagpur, Maharashtra from today. The inaugural route of the bus is Morris College (Sambhidhaan Chowk) to Nagpur Airport.

Sources say that four such ethanol buses are likely to join the pilot project undertaken by NMC and Scania, by January 2015.
