The VOLVO 9400 PX is built on the new light - weight VOLVO PX platform, which provides enhanced gradeability and acceleration as well as enhanced stability. The new coach also packs a performance like never before with the VOLVO 11 litre engine with 370 HP. Another key feature is the steerable tag-axle for better road-handling and maneuverability.
A key feature of the VOLVO 9400PX is the VOLVO I-Shift Gearbox. This automatic gear changing system provides high drive & ride comfort, better fuel economy and in combination with VOLVO engine brake offers high braking power of 400 - 600 KW.
The VOLVO 9400PX enhances safety to a new level. VOLVO front Under-run protection (FUP) & Front Impact Protection (FIP) systems are implemented, which exceeds the European standard. A first from VOLVO, pushing the standards of safety in the country to new levels.
The VOLVO 9400 PX offers maximum availability with low maintenance, long service life and lowest fuel consumption, with the powerful VOLVO D11A engine, specially adapted for inter-city application. The in-line six-cylinder 11-litre engine with an overhead cam shaft, four valves per cylinder meets the BS-III emission standards. the engine's various functions are entirely controlled by VOLVO's EMS (Engine Management System), which contributes to low fuel consumption and low exhaust emissions. The D11A is available with powerful and efficient VOLVO Engine Brake (VEB) with braking power upto 265 KW providing a good vehicle control and reduced brake line wear especially on downhill drive. The EMS2 Engine Management System provides efficient and precise engine control by collecting data from several inputs on the engine and the vehicle, comparing with stored parameters, adjusting fuel quantity and injecting accordingly. The system communicates with the driver via a clear display on the instrument panel, providing real time diagnostic information of the vehicle. The instrument console has a simple and a logical design with convenient and easy to use controls.
Complementing the performance of D11A engine is VOLVO's unique I-Shift - intelligent 12-speed gear box with an automatic gear changing system that provides high drivability and ride comfort and excellent fuel economy. It comprises of a fast responding and flexible gear changing system supported by extremely powerful software with minimum interruption in torque delivery during changes and wide ratio span, a combination that offers impressive resources for high average speeds. Since the clutch function is regulated by the gear changing system there is no clutch pedal. The graphic program on the driver display shows the driving program selected, the available ratios up and down, the lever position and the selected gear. The gear selctor is ergonomically designed and placed on the side of the driver's seat and the changes are fully automated. Starting ratio is selected automatically in response to road gradient and gross vehicle weight. The gear level has no mechanical contact with the gearbox. By the level selection, gear changes can be fully automatic even when the cruise control is activated. The "Limp Home" function makes it possible to continue driving even if there is a fault with the transmission or teh clutch position sensor. It comes with an in-built hydraulic retarder.
The VOLVO 9400PX has an air intake placed above the engine to avoid the suction of road dust and water into the air filter. This helps in keeping the engine cleaner and reducing operational cost.
The fuel tank of the coach has a capacity of 540 ltrs - (540 x 1) with filling option on both sides.
The VOLVO 9400PX has 2 alternators with (150A x 2 alt) current capacity to meet the high load of electricity required for bus operation.
The new VOLVO PX suspension system enhances stability and comfort levels. The full air suspension ensures a smooth and comfortable ride. The Electronically Controlled Suspension (ECS) system provides extreme precise regulation of ride height. Each air spring assembly consists of a telescopic damper and an anti-roll bar is included in the rear and front suspension.
The VOLVO 9400PX has an integral hydraulic power assisted steering system. A distinct feature of the VOVLO 9400PX is the steerable-tag rear axle. The hydraulically steered tag axle provides vastly improved maneuverability, making it particularly useful in congested traffic conditions and winding stretches on highways. The steering geometry provides tuning radius of 11.7 mtr for a wheel base of 8.35 mtr.
The all new forged aluminium alloy wheels for tubeless tyres are capable of withstanding loads 400% more than the steel wheels without undergoing any deformation, therefore providing ultimate safety and security. They are 40% - 50% lighter than steel wheels and are 15% lighter than cast aluminium wheels. This gives more fuel economy and more payload capacity. Heat dissipation of aluminium is three times faster than steel wheels, therefore allowing long tyre life and brake performance.
