Biswajit SVM Chaser: Hubballi Dharwad BRTS conducts Citizens Meet

Hubballi Dharwad BRTS, also known as HD-BRTS is a proposed BRTS project being built to serve the twin cities of Hubballi and Dharwad, located in North Western part of Karnataka. The construction is funded by the Government of Karnataka, while the operation and maintenance work will be done by Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) in association with Karnataka State Transport Corporation (KSRTC).

The HD-BRT corridor consists of a 4 lane 'throughout' bus corridor of length 70 km, which planned running in the middle of an 8 lane freeway which includes two lanes for mixed traffic in both the directions. The width of the corridor will vary from 44 meters to 24.5 meters. Four underpasses for regular traffic are planned at Unkal Lake, Unkal-Cross Road, Bairidevarakoppa, and Navanagar.

The HDBRTS project is a Government of Karnataka initiative to foster long term economic growth in the region by keeping the congestion in check along the Pune-Bangalore road corridor. the proposed BRT system will not only transport the 1.75 lakh daily passengers currently using the buses on this corridor, but will also provide safe and efficient alternative for the private vehicle users travelling on this corridor.

A public consultation citizens meet was held at Hubballi and Dharwad on 18th June 2017. I attended the Citizens Meet held at Dr Ambedkar Bhawan, Dharwad. HDBRTS brochures were distributed followed by a presentation by the BRTS officials. There was also queries raised by the residents of Dharwad which were replied by the officials. Suggestions and feedback from people were also taken.
